Royal New Zealand Navy inshore patrol vessel, the HMNZS Taupō, is due to visit Port Nelson next week.
The 55m-long ship is expected to arrive at Port Nelson on February 25 as part of junior naval officers’ training. The vessel is due to depart again on February 28.
After graduating, warfare officers undertake a Basic Officer of the Watch course over 16 to 20 weeks, in which they learn the principles and processes of navigation and bridge watchkeeping, with classroom bridge simulator work and time at sea in HMNZS Taupō.
As well as time at sea, going in and out of Devonport Naval Base, HMNZS Taupō travels between ports as part of officers’ training. The ship is scheduled to visit Nelson, Whangarei, Tauranga and Timaru this year.

The commanding officer of the 340 tonne ship, Lieutenant Fletcher Slierendrecht, is originally from Nelson.
HMNZS Taupō is designed for maritime surveillance and patrol missions around New Zealand’s 15,000km coast and out to the 200 nautical mile limit of the country’s Exclusive Economic Zone. The ship was last in Nelson in November.
